Insulation conversations in most of the country focus on keeping heat in during cold winters. In Southern Utah, the primary job of insulation is keeping heat out during summers that regularly exceed 110°F. The physics are the same — resist heat transfer — but the priorities are different, and the right approach for desert homes differs from what works in northern climates.
Why Desert Homes Lose the Battle with Heat
The three main pathways for heat entry in a Southern Utah home:
- Attic/roof: Attics in St. George can reach 160–170°F in summer. Even with good insulation, that heat radiates down into living spaces. This is the #1 source of cooling load in most homes.
- Windows and glazing: Direct solar radiation through glass generates heat instantly. West-facing windows in particular can raise room temperatures dramatically during afternoon hours.
- Air infiltration: Every gap, crack, and penetration in the building envelope lets hot outside air in and cool inside air out. In our climate, this is an invisible but significant cooling cost.
R-Value Recommendations for Southern Utah
R-value measures thermal resistance — higher is better. Here's what we recommend for each building zone:
- Attic insulation: Minimum R-38, ideally R-49 to R-60. This is the highest-priority upgrade in most Southern Utah homes.
- Exterior walls: R-13 to R-21 (most existing homes are already at R-13 — upgrading requires significant work).
- Garage walls/ceiling shared with living space: R-19 minimum, R-30 preferred.
- Crawlspace/slab perimeter: R-10 minimum for slab insulation in colder months.
- Garage door: R-12 minimum, R-16 or higher recommended for attached garages.
Insulation Types for Desert Climates
Blown-In Fiberglass or Cellulose (Attic)
The most cost-effective attic insulation for existing homes in St. George and surrounding areas. Blown-in insulation fills gaps and voids in existing framing that batt insulation misses. Cellulose, made from recycled paper, is treated for fire and pest resistance and performs well in our climate.
Spray Foam (Critical Sealing Points)
Spray foam insulation is both an insulator and an air barrier. It's most effective applied at attic penetrations, top plates, and rim joists — the locations where air infiltration is highest. Two-pound closed-cell spray foam has R-values around R-6.5 per inch and stops air movement entirely.
Radiant Barrier (Attic)
A radiant barrier — reflective foil installed in the attic below the roof decking — reflects rather than absorbs solar radiation. In Southern Utah's intense sun, a properly installed radiant barrier can reduce attic temperatures by 20–30°F and cooling loads by 5–10%. Most effective when combined with adequate blown-in insulation above the living space ceiling.
Batt Insulation (Walls and Floors)
Standard fiberglass or rock wool batts are appropriate for wall cavities and between floor joists. Rock wool (mineral wool) performs slightly better than fiberglass in our extreme heat and also provides fire resistance.
Where to Start: Priority Order for Southern Utah Homes
- Air sealing the attic: Before adding insulation, seal all penetrations (light fixtures, pipes, top plates). Air sealing delivers the highest energy return in most homes.
- Increase attic insulation to R-38 or higher
- Add radiant barrier if not present
- Replace garage door with insulated model (R-12+)
- Address window shading (low-cost, high impact)
